A Federal court in Richmond (Virginia) sentenced the Russian citizen Irek Khamidullina to life imprisonment for the attack on the American military structure of the Taliban movement in Afghanistan in 2009. On Thursday, 3 December, reported the U.S. Department of justice.
«Fifty-five years old Ilgiz Irek Khamidullin, a citizen of Russia and a former commander of a tank crew in the Russian army, was sentenced today to life imprisonment and further to 30 years in prison for conspiracy to shoot down American helicopters and kill American and Afghan soldiers, as well as conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction», – quotes the message of the RIA «Novosti».
According to the prosecution, Khamidullin personally planned the operation, the purpose of which was to cause the American helicopters to the aid of Afghan border guards and then shoot down the car with a portable anti-aircraft missile system.
The operation, which was led by Khamidullin, failed because both jammed MANPADS and helicopters to shoot down failed. Followed by a shot of the American air force the whole group except Khamidullina, was destroyed. Khamidullina wounded and arrested the next day. As noted by the prosecution, during the arrest he shot back.
