About fifty people were killed and several escaped during the riots erupted on the night of Thursday at the prison in Monterrey, the capital of northeastern state of Nuevo Leon in Mexico.
This is reported on 11 February, foreign media citing local channel Milenio.
Witnesses reported shots were heard near the prison, and them broke out after the fire. Currently the area is cordoned off and patrolled by police squads. Conducted searches of fugitives.
The state government of Nuevo Leon said that the situation is out of control, but the details are not given. It is expected that the Governor will give today a press conference to clarify the situation.
Recall that such riots are not uncommon in Mexico where the crime rate is extremely high and the prisons are overcrowded by representatives of opposing gangs of drug traffickers.
In the articles it is noted that this uprising took place on the eve of the visit of Pope Francis, who arrives to Mexico this Friday and is going to visit a prison in the border of Ciudad Juarez – one of the most criminal cities in the world.
