Tuesday, December 8, the southern district Prosecutor’s office informed the acting mayor of Ashdod to Amram Knafo plans to file against him the indictment.
The Prosecutor’s office intends to accuse Knafo in a series of episodes of receiving bribes valued at hundreds of thousands of shekels. It is assumed that
Knafo received bribes from contractors and owners of construction companies operating in the city. The filing of the indictment will be preceded by hearings of the head of the economic Department of the southern district Prosecutor’s office.
Similar warnings were given to former members of the city Council of Ashdod Shlomo Elbaz and Yitzchak Dari.
At the same time calls were sent to the hearings of ten contractors suspected of bribery and other offenses.
According to published information, Knafo and Dari has created a firm that gives advice to business people in real estate. Prosecutors accuse them that through these firms they received from the contractors large sums of money, and instead promoted their interests in the city’s Board of planning and development. Elbaz is accused of similar actions.
All three was charged with obtaining batok, and the violation of public trust and withholding information from the Commission of the municipality.
The size of the bribes ranged from 320 thousand NIS 3.8 million shekels. In addition, Knafo received the right to purchase the land.
From the Ashdod municipality said that «bitterly learned of the decision to file an indictment against the acting mayor and former members of the city Council».
«We rely on the Israeli judicial system and law enforcement agencies and will continue to act in accordance with the strictest ethical standards», — say in the municipality.
