A number of leading Israeli archaeologists opposed the government’s decision on the extension of the Western Wall and the equipment of a new site South of the Maghrebi gate. It is reported by radio station «Sieves Beth».
They note that doing so would damage important historic monument: on this site are the fragments of the ruins of the temple complex, have appeared here during the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in the year 70 of our era.
Dr. Eilat Mazar, who led the excavations to the South of the Old town and in the area of the Ophel was convinced that the government has expressed its disregard for important archaeological and historical heritage of the Jewish people.
Colleague support and Professor Amos Kloner, who conducted the excavations of the so-called Talpidae tombs. He said that together with colleagues intends to launch a public campaign against the government’s decision. The Cloner is considering the possibility of appeal to the High court of justice.
We will remind: on 31 January, the government approved the project to create additional land for prayers at the Western Wall. Under the proposals, formed the head of the Jewish Agency, Natan Sharansky, the activists of the movement «women of the wall» abandon its claim to pray in the tallith and the Tefillin on the existing site reserved for women.
The decision provoked criticism from various parties. The Ministers Aryeh Deri and David Ausley (both SHAS), Yaakov litzman («Jadot and Torah») and URI Ariel («Bayt Yehudi») voted at a meeting of the government, and the Western Wall Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovich called the decision «a sad day in the life of the Jewish people.»
