Scientists from Stanford University found that a person’s face contains much more information about his sexual orientation than can be received and interpreted by the human brain. Preprint of article on this topic posted on the website PsyArXiv.
Researchers have created an algorithm that allows to determine sexual orientation based on facial traits and temporary external features such as hair or makeup.
The algorithm analyzed 35 326 of photos posted on one of the Dating sites. As a result, the artificial intelligence correctly identified the sexual orientation in 81% of cases for men and 74% for women, in that case, if we consider one photo of each person. If he was asked five shots, the accuracy reached 92% (men) and 83% (for women).
For comparison, people who were asked to guess the sexual orientation of the man in the photo, coped with the task much worse than the artificial intelligence: in case if the picture was a picture of a man of correct answers was only 61%, in case if the picture was a woman – 54%.
Scientists have warned against the use of this tool to invade the personal space of citizens.
