Delegates to the annual Assembly of the Association for the study of modern language, held yesterday in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by a majority vote rejected a resolution calling for an academic boycott of Israel.
In support of this proposal was 79 parties to the Convention, and 113 were against it, writes Sunday, January 8, edition of Forward.
In addition, the delegates approved another document, urging to reject all forms of academic boycott, which voted 101 people – voted against 93.
In the text adopted at this meeting resolution States that the boycott of Israeli academic and research institutions is contrary to the principles of the Association, declared its purpose to «promote the study and research of language and literature», at the time, as the curtailment of the debate with the representatives of universities of Israel «blocks the possibility of a dialogue and the possibility of exchange of scientific knowledge.»
Association for the study of modern language is one of the largest and most respected in the United States, it counts 24.000 members. During yesterday’s session, the deputies decided to postpone indefinitely a vote on a resolution condemning the curtailment of freedom of speech in the Palestinian universities in the Palestinian authority and under the authority of Hamas the Gaza strip.
