In Athens held a presidential Council of International chess Federation. The FIDE President made the decision to temporarily resign.

«In connection with the inclusion by the Ministry of Finance of the USA on the sanctions list by Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, a Russian citizen and the FIDE President, Mr. Ilyumzhinov informed the members of the Presidential Board of FIDE that it temporarily transfers the legal, financial and business powers relating to the activities of FIDE, until then, until his name will be removed from the list of sanctions of the Department for control of foreign assets.
Mr. Ilyumzhinov said that he started the legal process in the U.S. for the purpose of obtaining additional information and the abolition of restrictive measures imposed by the U.S. Treasury Department. At the next meeting of the Presidential Council of FIDE Mr. Ilyumzhinov will inform the Board on progress and the legal process. Ilyumzhinov decision to temporarily transfer all powers to the legal, financial and business issues relating to FIDE, was adopted in order that he could fully concentrate on the full clarification of the situation concerning the decision of the Ministry of Finance of the USA.
In this regard, and until the next official announcement, according to paragraph A. 9.5 of the statutes of FIDE, in this case, the President «can be represented by the first Vice President to perform the duties of the President. Thus, the first Vice-President will be able to submit a FIDE official, and you may sign documents on behalf of FIDE».
Perform the duties of the head of the International chess Federation will be the first Vice-President of the Federation Georgios Makropoulos.
