72-year-old American businessman Douglas Tompkins was killed while traveling in Chile after his kayak turned over on lake General Carrera in the Patagonian Andes, The New York Times reported. The cause of death was hypothermia.
According to BBC, apart from Tompkins have suffered five more person. The injured businessman was taken by helicopter to hospital, but doctors could only establish his death.
Tompkins was one of the founders of the brand sports apparel and gear The North Face (currently is part of VF Corporation a Corporation): he started this company in 1968, together with Dick Klopp. He later became a co-founder of the company for the production of casual wear Esprit. As at the end of 2015, was considered a billionaire.
Douglas Tompkins was an active defender of the environment. In the 1990s, he began to buy lands in Patagonia and turn them into protected natural parks.
