On Tuesday, February 7, the Prosecutor’s office has charged the mayor of Ashkelon Itamar Shimoni. In the framework of the indictment presented to the district court in tel Aviv, Shimoni is accused of accepting bribes, fraud and deception of public trust.
In the text of the indictment refers to the fact that Shimoni had received a bribe of 466.000 shekels from businessmen Joel, David and Galbi, Mugenzi in exchange for help Shimoni in the promotion of their business interests.
The mayor of Ashkelon is also accused that he had received a bribe of 575 thousand shekels to pay «compensation» to women who claimed the mayor sexually harassed.
The prosecution also submitted, Ofer Shimoni, the mayor’s brother, businessman Yoel, David, Deputy mayor Moshe Ponte, and attorney Sharon Miller.
The Prosecutor’s office also requests to prohibit Shimoni to take the post of mayor until the trial is completed.
