Sunday, 13 December, the Haifa district court approved a settlement agreement between the state, Management of parks and reserves, the Jewish national Fund (KKL) and the Association of workers of the fire service, on the one hand, and owners of homes and businesses affected by the fire and extinguishing the fire on mount Carmel in December 2010, on the other hand.
In accordance with the reached agreement, the owners of the affected homes and businesses will receive, in total, 54 million shekels as compensation for damages. This amount is approximately one half the amount that victims initially demanded.
Recall that a forest fire was raging in the mount Carmel area five years ago for four days. As a result of arson burned out of the forest about 50 thousand dunams of planted forests, killing 42 people, burned houses in several settlements.
In the operation to extinguish forest fires involved more than a thousand firefighters – both from Israel and another from 15 countries. To extinguish the fire were involved about 40 aircraft and helicopters which arrived to Israel from Russia, USA, UK, Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Italy, France, Switzerland and Azerbaijan.
