12 February in the capital of Cuba is scheduled to meet the head of the Roman Catholic Church Pope Francis head of the Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill, reports NEWSru.com.
About the planned meeting on 5 February, said the Chairman of the Department for external Church relations of Moscow Patriarchate (DECR) Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk. He noted that this meeting will be held for the first time in history.
The Pope intends to discuss with the Patriarch the issue of the persecution of Christians in the modern world. Hilary said that the killing of the Christian population in the middle East and in Africa, requires close cooperation of all churches.
According to Hilarion, the Patriarch did not want to hold a meeting in Europe, as the continent associated with the most massive conflicts between different branches of Christianity. Since the visit of Pope Francis in Mexico coincided with the visit of Kirill to Latin America, it was decided to meet in Cuba.
Francis and Kirill will also discuss bilateral relations and topical issues of international politics. Following the meeting, the leaders of the two churches intend to make a joint statement.
