Monday, 1 February, the Knesset held a ceremony of opening of a small obelisk in memory of the settlements of gush Katif that were destroyed in the framework of the disengagement in 2005.
The obelisk on which are engraved the names of all destroyed villages, was established on the initiative of the speaker of the Knesset Julius Edelstein, and its opening took place on the day when in school Israel day «was celebrated gush Katif». In the framework of the events of this day, held every 22nd of the Hebrew month of Shevat, the students tell about the history of the settlement, the residents of gush Katif and the disengagement process.
The opening of the monument in the Knesset has caused the protest of the head of the radical left movement «peace now Shalom» AREVA of Oppenheimer has. He appealed to the legal Advisor of the Knesset Eyal Inon the requirement to clarify whether the right of the speaker of the Knesset to establish a similar obelisk in the Parliament building.
«With all due respect to the pain of the evacuees, the memorial in memory of a specific political event, which caused no casualties, is an unworthy action gives rise to the suspicion that the speaker belongs to the Parliament, as his own home,» said the Oppenheimer has.
Legal Advisor of the Knesset submitted a response, which explained that «it is a small commemorative bench and not on a permanent memorial plaque». Eyal Inon added that «the speaker denied the request to install a permanent memorial plaque».
Himself Yuli Edelstein said that «apparently everyone in our country leads to the differences.» According to Edelstein, «as long as I speaker of the Parliament, the obelisk will remain here.»
«In life it so happens that the majority that decides, not always right,» Edelstein said at the opening ceremony of the obelisk. «I very much hope that the young generation, which will visit the Knesset, will know that in the gush Qatif life was like before the disengagement, we will make our contribution to the preservation of the memory of the evacuated settlements of gush Katif and Northern Samaria,» added the Parliament speaker.
