On Friday evening, December 4, at the age of 75 years died one of the leaders of the left camp of Israel politicians, former Knesset member and journalist Yossi Sarid.
Sarid died of a heart attack at his home in tel Aviv. In recent years he had some serious health problems. In 2004 he underwent surgery to remove a benign brain tumor.
Yossi Sarid was a member of the Knesset ten convocations (1974-2006), first from the party Mapai and then of Meretz.In 1992-1996 and 1999-2000 respectively the positions of Minister of ecology and Minister of education.
From 1996 to 2006 he headed the Meretz party, in 2001-2003 he served as Chairman of the opposition.
Sarid argued strongly in support of the Oslo accords, the return of the Golan heights of Syria, abandoning the Temple mount in exchange for giving the Palestinians the right of return, against the operation «protective edge».
In domestic policy, advocated the separation of religion from the state, the expansion of state involvement in the regulation of the market, fought for the increase in the budgets of the ministries of health and education.
After retiring from politics wrote several books, regularly published articles in leading Israeli Newspapers.
