17 Mat died Nobel prize for literature, the Caribbean poet and playwright Derek Walcott, reports the BBC. He was 87 years old.
Walcott received the Nobel prize for literature in 1992 at the age of 62 years, after so many years was in the short list award. The award was given «for bright poetry, full of historicism and resulting devotion to the culture in all its diversity». He is considered one of the greatest poets of the second half of the twentieth century.
Derek Walcott was born in Saint Lucia, in the family of teachers. In 1953 his parents moved to Trinidad, where the future writer was educated at the College of Santa Maria. Later Walcott graduated from the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica. At the same time, the press had published his first works. After receiving a literary scholarship of the Rockefeller Foundation trained in new York and England. Walcott subsequently received the title of Professor at Boston University, where he taught literature and writing skills.
