The mother of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad – Anise Mahluf – died in Damascus on Saturday, 6 February, at the age of 86. This was reported in the office of the Syrian President.

Anise Machluf was born in 1930 in Latakia in a wealthy family belonging to a religious minority the alawites. She married the former President of Syria Hafez al-Assad in 1957, when he was a Lieutenant in the Syrian air force.
After in 1971, Hafez al-Assad became President, his wife rarely appeared in public. notes BBC news.
