A guest of the new project Face to Face, the international community’s «Midrash of Zionit», became Professor Eitan Sheshinski. The meeting discussed topical economic issues such as our tax dollars, Swedish position on Israel and Israel’s energy future.
Professor Sheshinski, who became the second visitor to this project, stood at the head of several government commissions named in his honour, such as the Commission on the issues of taxes on natural resource extraction. Many consider him to be an ideologist of today’s Israeli taxation.
Speaking about prospects of export of Israeli gas, Sheshinski Professor noted that «an important strategic direction for the export of Israeli gas should be Europe». According to him, European countries are concerned that a major supplier is Russia, and they wanted to get rid of this dependence». Sicinski added: «We need to use this option as soon as possible, because Iran and Qatar will in the coming years to develop its gas fields, and to create competition in this industry.»
About tax on international and Israeli companies, Sicinski said: «If we want to be competitive to attract international companies in Israel — we must provide them with favorable conditions, such as Intel. We compete with the world. The Intel Ireland has offered more favorable terms, and the new plant, Intel has built in Ireland. This is a really controversial question, but, in the end, I believe that Intel built a plant in Qiryat gat, has given more to Israel than Israel has enabled this company. However, I believe that such Israeli companies as «Teva», «ICL Le-Yisrael», and others, should pay more taxes than they do today.»
The aim of the project Face to Face to familiarize new immigrants with the realities of the Middle East and the main challenges facing Israeli society. Meetings with leading experts and key figures of the Israeli establishment are in an informal setting, «behind the bar».
