Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during a ceremony held at the Istanbul shipyard, announced that it will soon start the development and then the construction of the first Turkish aircraft carrier.
«Towards the realization of this project there are no barriers. Requires only one thing – political will. Turkey cannot afford to be complacent about the issues of military construction and national defense. The strategic position of our country will not allow it», — said the head of state.
Erdogan said that the construction of the first aircraft carrier will only begin after the Turkish Navy will get the amphibious assault ship Anadolu capable of carrying 8 aircraft with short takeoff, transport helicopters and up to 1,200 Marines. As expected, the vehicle, created based on the Spanish Juan Carlos, will be obtained after 2020.
The main task of this ship – an action far from their native shores. However, as the Black sea and Eastern Mediterranean are in the range of the Turkish air force, especially when you consider that North Cyprus is under Turkish control. Thus, it remains unclear why Erdogan needs aircraft carriers.
