EU approves visa-free regime with Ukraine: the Russian Federation named him «carrot on a rope»

The EU Council approved the introduction of a visa-free regime for citizens of Ukraine, as reported on Thursday, may 11, on the official website of the European Commissioner for migration Dimitris Avramopoulos.

«A year ago I came to Kyiv to personally congratulate the Ukrainian government with great effort that they have made the implementation of reforms envisaged by the liberalization of the visa regime. Today I am glad to see that we are approaching the end of this process. I welcome the adoption of the Council decision on visa liberalization for Ukraine – the last step to visa-free travel to the Schengen area for Ukrainian citizens», – quotes the statement of the European Commissioner website NEWSru.com.

«Interfax» explains that the Ministers of agriculture of member countries of the Council of the European Union on 11 may reviewed and approved the corresponding regulations of the European Parliament and of the Council amending regulation N539/2001, which lists the third countries whose nationals when crossing the external borders must have a visa, countries whose nationals are exempt from this requirement (Ukraine).

Now the document must be signed by the Chairman of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani and Prime Minister of the EU presidency of Malta Joseph Muscat. According to RIA Novosti, it could happen on may 15.

After the entry into force of visa-free regime citizens of Ukraine who have biometric passports will be able to freely visit the EU for up to 90 days. This rule will apply to all countries — EU members except Ireland and the UK, and with the exception of four countries outside the EU but outside the Schengen area, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

The European Union reserves the right to suspend visa-free regime with Ukraine in case of problems with the migration, or security, reported the press service of the EU Council.

The Russian foreign Ministry has commented on the decision, calling the visa-free regime of Ukraine with the EU «carrot on a string».

«This so-called visa-free regime with Ukraine – to a certain extent, such a «carrot on a string», which is just slightly simplifies the existing system. Remains (condition) — in only three months within half a year, it has no relationship to the work permit,» said Deputy foreign Minister Alexei Meshkov.
