Monday, may 15, at the office of the President of Israel, was sworn in as a judge of the Sharia court of the Khan Khatib, a lawyer from Camry.
President Reuven Rivlin congratulated the Khatib appointment, calling it «a success for the judicial system.» The President also expressed hope that soon the female judges will appear in other religious courts.
Sharia (Muslim court) consider matters of personal status of Muslims in Israel. In his exclusive jurisdiction includes questions of marriage and divorce, as well as some other issues. Other personal status matters, Sharia court has concurrent jurisdiction with the family court.
