The German authorities threaten to withdraw its military contingent of the NATO from the territory of Turkey, said German Chancellor Angela Merkel, quoted in the British newspaper The Independent.
«We will continue negotiations with Turkey, but in parallel we will explore other options for placing soldiers. This means we will seek an alternative base of «Incirlik», for example, in Jordan» – quoted Merkel news Agency «Interfax».
This harsh statement was made after Ankara refused to allow a delegation of the Bundestag on the base of «Incirlik», housing nearly 270 German soldiers.
The reason for this step of the Turkish authorities referred to the decision of Berlin to grant asylum to the military personnel, which Turkey accused of involvement in the military rebellion in the summer of 2016.
In addition, like The Independnet, in early may of 2017, the German government has said it will not allow living in the country of the Turks to vote in a referendum on returning the death penalty in Turkey. Official Berlin has caused outrage from the Turkish side, forbidding her to lead politicians in Germany are campaigning before the referendum on extension of powers of the President.
Press Secretary of the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Germany Martin Schaefer said that the Minister, Sigmar Gabriel, will raise the question of the admission of the German delegation at Incirlik at the upcoming summit of PATO in Washington.
As reported by a leading Turkish newspaper Hurriyet , Schaefer called Ankara’s actions are unacceptable.
