The administration of tel Aviv University has banned employees of the telephone customer service center to conduct working interviews in Arabic, said on Wednesday, February 17, Yarden Scoop in ha’aretz.
According to published information, until recently in the customer service center worked one the Arab employee, however, in January 2016 she resigned in order to received the order not to speak with customers in Arabic. Currently, the service center has a new employee an Arab woman who is forbidden to talk with customers in their native language.
Ha’aretz writes that the order was given by head shifts, which referred to the direction of the administration. «The University provides the opportunity to obtain information on academic and other issues solely in Hebrew, and this obliges us», — stated in the decree addressed to officials of the telephone center.
Haaretz cites the testimony of an Arab student, who spoke with the representative of customer service center. During the conversation, he realized that his Arab companion, and offered to use the native language. However, the employee explained that it was forbidden by the instructions. The indignant student tried to get more information about the reasons for such a ban, however he did not succeed.
From tel-Aviv University the newspaper «Haaretz» reported that «the facts will be closely examined, and then the University administration will form a recommendation to fluent students who contact the customer service center».
