Commander of the Central military district major-General Roni NUMA has signed an order declaring the «House of the patriarchs» in Hebron a closed military zone.
Disputes over the ownership of three-storey house, located next to the Cave of the Patriarchs, have been going on for five years. At the end of March 2012, the Jewish residents of Hebron, settled the controversial «House of the patriarchs». They provided to the civil administration documents that they claim show that the structure obtained legally. In this case, two branches of one Palestinian family’s claim that the building belongs to them. The civil administration ordered the forced evacuation of residents.
13 Jul 2013 the appeals Commission of the military court of Judea and Samaria recognized the legitimate purchase of Hebron’s «House of the patriarchs» by the Council of the Jewish residents of the city. However, the settlement required the sanction of the Minister of defence.
On 25 July of the current year about hundreds of Jews cracked the seals on the doors of the building and barricaded themselves inside, refusing to leave. The house was surrounded by military and police personnel that do not allow right-wing activists to approach the building.
The evening of the same day the Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu instructed defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, not to carry out forced evacuation of the «House of the patriarchs» in the night of Wednesday, July 26.
