In Cairo on Thursday, 20 April, took place the opening ceremony of the monument to Alexander Pushkin. Among its participants were Russian Ambassador to Egypt and the Governor of the city.
As reported TASS, the monument was erected in the Park, «al-Hurriya» («Freedom»), in the centre of the Egyptian capital, at the initiative of the local Association of graduates of Russian universities and the Russian centre of science and culture (RCSC).
According to the head of the Russian center Alexei Tevanyan, this is the third monument to Pushkin on the territory of Egypt, however, «this is the first bust of the great poet in a public Park, which is visited by thousands of Egyptians.»
Previously, the monument to Pushkin was installed in the library of Alexandria and the school of foreign languages at Cairo University «Ayn al-Shams».
