Thursday, February 11, in Detmold (Western Germany) began the trial of 94-year-old Reinhold a Hanning, a former security guard of the concentration camp Auschwitz. One of the last known survivor of Nazi war criminals accused of killing 170 of thousands of Jews, reports the Associated Press.
A former member of the SS does not deny that he served in Auschwitz as a guard, but says that was in the part of the camp, where there were no gas chambers, and was not directly involved in the destruction of the prisoners.
The prosecution alleges that all guards participated in the «work» camps, and that in 1944, when Auschwitz was driven several hundred thousand Hungarian Jews, their destruction was attended by almost all employees of the camp.
The trial Hanning was moved from the courtroom to the building of the chamber of Commerce of the city to accommodate the huge number of spectators and journalists. The city also strengthened police patrols.
During the first trial will testify 94-year-old former prisoner of Auschwitz Leon Baum who called, who now lives in Berlin.
