In 1940, when the city was captured by the Nazis, he and other Jews were placed in ghettos, but they continued to hold the candy store. The candies, chocolates and lollipops saved his life. He later recalled: the ghetto was emptied, his neighbors were sent to concentration camps and he and his family remained in the store. The Germans liked his sweets, and they were filled with the best candy their pockets.
But in 1944, when it was ordered to liquidate the ghetto, children of Israel Krishtal were killed and he and his wife were sent to Auschwitz. In 1945, after the liberation from the concentration camp, he learned that his wife died. Future survivor was weighed 33 pounds.
