March 17 at the mouth of the river Kishon in Haifa held a ceremony of launching an exact copy of an ancient Phoenician boat found in 1985 on the bottom of the Mediterranean sea near kibbutz Maagan Michael.
The wreck was discovered by one of the kibbutzniks at a distance of just 70 meters from the shore. On the spot was found, and several ceramic vessels. Finds entered the collection of the Museum «Hecht» in Haifa University.
A few years ago the academic Council of the University decided to create an exact copy of this single-masted sailing boat and use it for research purposes. The project implementation took two and a half years, the work involved 20 people. This number includes professionals and volunteers.
Not without the participation of returnees. Carpenter, Alexander Efremov in Russia managed to take part in the creation of two wooden sailing ships. Smith Igor shteiman was drawn to the project by the Department of employment of the Ministry of absorption.
The vessel length about 13 meters width – 4 meters. Its displacement was only 25 tons. However, for many centuries, these ships and their brave sailors reigned in the Mediterranean.
Project Director, Dr. Debi Estimates of Haifa University notes that the construction of exact copies of a cutter sailing vessel is a difficult task. Moreover, we used virtually the same techniques, materials and tools used by shipbuilders about 3000 years ago.
«Now we will use it for the purposes of research. We have to learn how the Phoenicians went to sea and was ruled by such a vessel. So there is still a lot of work,» — said the expert.
