In the Ukrainian city Nikolaev city hall ordered to rename 120 streets as part of the process of decommunization. In particular, the street of Karl Liebknecht street is now called Menachem Mendel Schneerson.
Menachem, Mendl Shneerson (1902-1994) was born in Nikolaev. He headed for the Lubavicher Chasids and became one of the most influential Jewish spiritual leaders during the twentieth century.
The mayor of Nikolaev Alexander Senkevich noted that it was also suggested to return the street Libknekhta, historical name, Chernigov, but in the end it was decided to grant the request of one of the Jewish communities.
