Former Israeli President Shimon Peres is due to arrive at the weekend in Johannesburg to participate in the event in support of Israel organized by the Jewish organizations in South Africa. In the light of the visit of Peres, the Muslim lawyers Association of South Africa demanded from General Prosecutor to issue a warrant for the arrest of Perez, according to «Maariv».
The grounds for that is the support given by Perez of France in the war with Algeria and the assault on the village of Qana during operation Grapes of wrath. However, according to «Maariv», the main reason for requiring the arrest of the former President of Israel is his support of the apartheid regime in South Africa in the 70-ies and 80-ies.
The Ministry of justice and Ministry of foreign Affairs of Israel negotiating with the South African authorities and trying to prevent the issue of a warrant for the arrest of Perez.
