Wednesday, may 10, at the plenary session of the Knesset in a preliminary reading approved a bill that defines the state of Israel as the state of the Jewish people («hawk of LEOM»).
During the discussion, an MP from the United Arab list Jamal Zahalka tore up the bill, after which he was removed from the hall.
The bill was supported by 48 MPs. 41 the Deputy was against it.
The bill defines Israel as a Jewish and democratic state. According to the draft law, Israel’s capital is Jerusalem, and the official language is Hebrew. In turn, the Arabic language will receive special status. The bill says that Israel is the national home of the Jewish people, which has the exclusive right to national self-determination in Israel.
We are talking about a private bill submitted by Knesset member AVI Dichter over (Likud).
However, the radio station «Reshet bet» reported that the coalition parties made a decision in the next two months to submit an alternative governmental bill which will together with the bill Dichter referred for discussion to the legislative Commission.
