Interpol has rejected the appeal of the authorities of the Russian Federation, asking to declare on the international wanted list the former owner of YUKOS Mikhail Khodorkovsky, who is in absentia charged with murder.
As reported TASS, the Interpol General Secretariat has considered the request sent via the Bureau in Moscow, and came to the conclusion that the petition does not comply with the rules of this organization.
Yesterday it was reported that the Russian Bureau of Interpol has sent a request for the announcement of Khodorkovsky wanted. Its press-the Secretary of Kulle Pispanen stated that the former head of Yukos is not troubled by the request.
The Russian authorities declared Khodorkovsky on the international wanted list as early as last December, accusing former head of Yukos in the murder of mayor of Nefteyugansk Vladimir Petukhov.
We will remind, last summer the Investigative Committee resumed the investigation of the murder of Nefteyugansk mayor Vladimir Petukhov. As the customer of murder of SC considered the figure of Khodorkovsky. A few weeks ago, Khodorkovsky was declared in the Federal wanted list in Russia. This was done after he did not appear on a call on interrogation in Investigatory Committee of the Russian Federation in connection with the new charges in the case of Alexei Pichugin, former security chief of Yukos. Then the press-Secretary of Khodorkovsky, Kyle Pispanen said to «Interfax» that Khodorkovsky does not intend to get in touch with RF IC and to cooperate with the investigation.
In 90-e years of the last century, YUKOS was the main enterprise of the city of Nefteyugansk. According to some reports, the mayor Petukhov was in conflict with the company due to non-payment of taxes to the local budget. He demanded to Institute against YUKOS criminal case, and June 15, 1998 hunger strike for the sake of the criminal case on the fact of tax evasion. The action of the mayor was terminated after promising the Governor of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug Alexander Filipenko to verify the information and to take action. However, on 26 June 1998, on the day of Khodorkovsky’s birthday, Petukhov was shot on the way to work. The widow of mayor argued that the reason for the murder was «an attempt to test the activity of NK YUKOS, caused by the tax non-payment».
In 2007 Alexey Pichugin, the former head of Department of internal economic security of YUKOS oil company, was found guilty of three murders and four attempted murders, including the murder of the mayor of Nefteyugansk, and sentenced to life imprisonment. 31 January 2008 the Supreme court left the sentence in force.
Khodorkovsky has repeatedly denied any involvement in the murder of Petukhov. His lawyers pointed out the absurdity of the charges.
