The Minister for foreign Affairs of Iraq Ibrahim al-Jaafari appealed to countries possessing nuclear energy, with the request to assist his country in building a nuclear reactor.
During the meeting of presidents and heads of governments, held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, the foreign Minister of Iraq stated that the reactor is required only for peaceful purposes. According to the head of the Iraqi foreign Ministry, his country has the right to use nuclear energy, as in 1989, it signed the Convention on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
In the past, Iraq had at its disposal three nuclear reactor. One of them was destroyed by Israel in 1981, two more were attacked by the US air force at the beginning of the Gulf war in 1991.
