The Iraqi government issued an ultimatum to the authorities of Iraqi Kurdistan and demanded until Friday to transfer control of all airports, to avoid international air embargo, according to Reuters.
The ultimatum does not apply to internal flights.
Shortly before the referendum on independence for the Iraqi Kurdistan government of Iraq has asked other countries to stop flights to Kurdistan, but that request was responded only Iran.
A referendum on Iraqi Kurdistan’s independence was held on Monday, 25 September, despite the pressure of world powers and threat to the neighbors. According to the preliminary results, as expected, the majority of Kurds voted for independence in the region.
The Prime Minister of Iraq Haidar al-Abadi said that the Iraqi government will discuss with leaders of the Kurds the results of the referendum because, according to him, the referendum is «unconstitutional».
