The government of Israel for the first time in the last 10 years made the decision on granting the status of temporary resident illegal migrants from Darfur region in Western Sudan where ethnic conflict killed hundreds of thousands of people. According to the newspaper «Haaretz», such a status at this stage will get 200 refugees from Darfur.
However, the lawyers representing the interests of refugees from Darfur in Israel, I believe that it is a «cosmetic solution,» writes journalist Ilan Lior. According to them, 2,300 more Darfurians are waiting for the decision of their problems, because, not having the status of temporary resident, they cannot work in Israel legally, no health insurance.
The status of temporary resident also entitles you to social benefits and allows you to leave Israel and to return.
Ha’aretz writes that the decision on granting the status to 200 refugees from Darfur was taken by the Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu and interior Minister Aryeh Deri, under the pressure of the legal adviser of the government of Aviha Mandelblit.
