The Ministry of defence conducts demining activities in the area of Qasr al-Yahud, on the border between Israel and Jordan North of the Dead sea.
According to the New Testament, it was here that Jesus was baptized Christ, therefore, Qasr al-Yahud is the site of regular pilgrimage for Christians from around the world. However, because of the mines the area that tourists can visit, is severely limited.
The press service of the defense Ministry reports that in 2018 or 2019 it is planned to demine about 1000 dunams (1 square kilometer) site in the area. Be removed some 3,000 landmines (antipersonnel and antitank), ammunition and other dangerous items.
The project is implemented jointly with the Fund Halo Trust, which raised money to clear the area of Qasr al-Yahud in 2016. This organization was established in 1998 and operates in 15 countries, helping in the demining of the territories. In particular, the Fund specialists worked in Georgia, Kosovo, Somalia, Ukraine and other countries.
Israel controls the Qasr al-Yahud since 1967. In 1968, organized a pilgrimage to this Holy place for Christians.
