On Tuesday, may 16, near the Jordanian capital, Amman, took place the solemn opening of the first synchrotron in the middle East.
The SESAME project (Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East), in which was built a particle accelerator, aimed at deepening regional cooperation, guidance, scientific and cultural bridges, and preventing «brain drain» from the Middle East.
Talking about the construction of the accelerator was carried out for 20 years, but to realize the project was not easy. Israel and Iran, but also Turkey and Cyprus do not maintain diplomatic relations with each other. Iran could not pay the co-payment imposed on its banking system sanctions. In addition, killed two Iranian nuclear scientists who worked in this project. They murder, the Iranian authorities blamed Israel. Our troubles were not over: after the start of construction of the roof of the centre collapsed under the weight of snow, which is a rarity in the region, reports the BBC.
The turning point came in 2012, when Israel, Iran, Jordan and Egypt have pledged to contribute $ 5 million. After this financing was guaranteed by Italy, UNESCO and the European Union.
In the project in addition to the above countries are also involved Pakistan, Bahrain, Cyprus and the Palestinian authority.
The opening ceremony was attended by members of the ruling dynasty of Jordan, the official representatives of Cyprus, Egypt, Iran, Israel, Pakistan and Turkey, as well as delegations from CERN, UNESCO and IAEA.
