The government of the Kurdish Autonomous region of Iraq is suggested not to make any practical steps for the implementation of the referendum on independence in exchange for a cessation of hostilities between the Kurds and the Iraqi army.
«The armed struggle will not bring victory to any one party, it would only plunge the region into chaos,» said the government, adding that the negotiations will be conducted on the basis of the Iraqi Constitution, defending the principle of federalism.
However, the command of the Iraqi army announced that military action will continue. It is not clear whether the government forces intend to take control of the Kurdish Autonomous region. «Military actions have nothing to do with political steps,» said the army press-service.
At least three Iraqi soldiers were killed in battles with Kurdish self-defense groups «Peshmerga» in the South-East of the province of Mosul. Both sides used artillery and mortars. The Kurds managed to dislodge government forces from the city of Makhmour.
