Thursday, 1 February, the leader of the party «Yesh Atid» Yair Lapid appealed to the EU Ambassador Emmanuel Joffre and urged him to strongly condemn the law passed that night, the Polish Senate.
«Against the backdrop of the recent decision of the Polish government, which provides for criminal liability for allegations of complicity of poles with the Nazis during the Second world war, I urge the European Union is drastically, unequivocally and publicly condemn the law. If the EU is not only economic policies, but claims that also represents Europe’s shared values, part of these values should be their opposition to the attempts to rewrite the darkest part of European history. No one argues that Poland has built the death camps, but the destruction of six million Jews by the Nazis would be impossible without outside cooperation. Anti-Semitism existed before the Nazis came to power in Europe and in Poland in particular. In Jedwabne hundreds of Jews were caught and murdered by their neighbors-poles. The pogrom in Kielce in 1946 staged by Polish soldiers, policemen and citizens. And it proves once again that anti-Semitism, with the deliverance of Europe from Nazism, has not disappeared.
Israel unequivocally and strongly condemns the Polish law. MKS from coalition and opposition parties initiated the bill against Poland’s attempts to rewrite history. It is time that the European Union has condemned Poland adopted a law that denies their involvement in the Holocaust. We will not forget and will not forgive. No nation in the world will not be able to forget and forgive the murder of millions of people, half of them children. Attempts to rewrite history, trying to evade responsibility – not pass! And I ask you to act with all the firmness and determination against the law,» wrote Yair Lapid in an address to the Ambassador of the EU.
