The Minister of transport and public works of Lebanon Youssef Finianos announced the intention to build to the South Lebanon town of Naqoura, the international sea port.
Naqoura is the southernmost coastal settlement of Lebanon and is less than 3 kilometers from the border with Israel. Since 1978, it is the headquarters of the international contingent of UN troops in southern Lebanon (UNIFIL).
According to Fenianos, the construction of the port on the border is «to revive economic activity in the villages South of the border» and «be a barrier to the ambitions of Israel.»
«Every day we have to prove to the enemy that we are ready to confront it,» said the Minister.
Recall that in the last days the government of Lebanon wants Israel to cease construction of the barrier on the border between the two countries, «as violating its sovereignty,» however, UNIFIL confirmed that all construction is carried out on Israeli territory.
Lebanon also claims part of the exclusive economic waters, Israeli declared on the basis of the Israeli-Cypriot and Lebanese-Cypriot agreement. Moreover, the Lebanese government gave the French-Italian-Russian consortium the right to explore for oil and gas in the disputed waters.
