According to The Wall Street Journal, amid tensions between Russia and the United States, Washington intends to impose restrictions on flights of Russian military aircraft over us territory are allowed under the Treaty on open skies.
The Treaty on open skies was signed in March 1992 in Helsinki by representatives of 23 member States of the Organization for security and cooperation in Europe. The document provides acceded to 34 States the right to fly over each other’s territory to monitor military activity.
In August of this year in the United States began a new discussion about compliance with the Treaty when the plane Tu-154 of the Russian air force circled over Washington, and flew over Virginia, Pennsylvania and new Jersey.
Note that this was not the first observation flight Russian air force over the United States this year.
Like the previous flight, this flight was agreed. Russia warned the US about flying for 72 hours, as the contract requires. On Board the Russian plane were American observers.
