Members of SHAS voted against the bill on discrimination in schools

Knesset members 43 votes to 38 to reject a bill Meir Cohen («Yesh Atid») and Merav Michaeli («Zionist camp»), providing for a reduction in the funding of schools which discriminate against children when applying for a school.

The bill is aimed primarily against the ultra-Orthodox Ashkenazi schools often refuse to accept children from Sephardic families.

The deputies of the party of the Sephardic Orthodox Jewish SHAS had planned to abstain from voting, but when it became clear that without their votes the bill will be approved, were forced to vote against it.

MP SHAS Yigal of the EGAT stated during the voting that he was ashamed, but he was forced to vote against the bill.
