Tuesday, December 22, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of foreign Affairs and European integration of Montenegro Igor Luksic received a letter from the Secretary-General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg, who officially invited Montenegro to begin the process of joining NATO, reports RIA Novosti with reference to the foreign Ministry of Montenegro.
«In accordance with the established procedure, after receiving the invitation letter is expected to open accession talks, which will last a few months. Upon completion of negotiations, member States will sign the Protocol on the accession of Montenegro to the Alliance, and will begin the ratification process. The Protocol will allow Montenegro to participate in most NATO summits», – stated in the message on the official website of the government of Montenegro.
In the text published by the Ministry of foreign Affairs, noted that Montenegro with full dedication will continue to perform its obligations under Euro-Atlantic integration of the program.
Three weeks ago, on 2 December, Montenegro received an official invitation to join NATO, becoming the first state to receive the invitation to NATO for the last 6 years.
NATO is going to expand for the first time since 2009, when the block entered Albania and Croatia, and Montenegro should become the 29th state of the Alliance.
Earlier, Moscow sent out warnings to several NATO countries and stressed that the inclusion of Montenegro in the Alliance will adversely affect their relations with Russia.
After the official announcement about the invitation of Russia declared that in case of accession of Montenegro to NATO, relations between countries will deteriorate, in particular, will be impossible the realization of joint programs, including on military-technical cooperation.
