December 2, Montenegro received an official invitation to join the North Atlantic Alliance, becoming the first state to receive the invitation to NATO for the last 6 years, reports the BBC.
NATO is going to expand for the first time since 2009, when the block entered Albania and Croatia, and Montenegro should become the 29th state of the Alliance.
Earlier, Moscow sent out warnings to several NATO countries and stressed that the inclusion of Montenegro in the Alliance will adversely affect their relations with Russia.
After the official announcement of the invitation, as reported by RIA Novosti, Russia declared that in case of accession of Montenegro to NATO, relations between countries will deteriorate, in particular, will be impossible the realization of joint programs, including on military-technical cooperation.
The process of accession of Montenegro to NATO will take about a year.
