According to the annual report of the Secretary-General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg, Russia over the past few years conducted a number of exercises, which simulated nuclear strikes on countries-members of NATO and their allies.
According to NATO, over the last three years Russia has conducted at least 18 large-scale military exercises, some of which were attended by over 100 thousand troops.
In the report, in particular, refers to the exercises conducted by Russia in March 2013, when Russian military aircraft flew 30 kilometres from the Swedish island of Gotland, located just 160 km from Central Stockholm. According to the authors of the report, the aircraft deviated from the usual route of the Russian air force in the region, led one of several «simulations of nuclear attacks» on NATO countries and their partners.
«The pace of military manoeuvres and exercises of the Russian troops has reached proportions not seen since the Cold war,» writes in the report Stoltenberg.
Recall that in late January Brannstrom Anders, chief of staff of the army of Sweden, said during a meeting of the military leadership of the country that after 200 years of peaceful life the Swedes should prepare for war with «an experienced enemy», which could erupt in the next few years. Currently the military leadership of Sweden develops long-term plans, including the possibility of full-scale war with superior forces of the enemy in the period from 2016 to 2020-th year. Brannstrom urged to unite around the army that should be able to ensure their support for political decisions of the government in such a difficult period.
