According to the USGS, the epicenter was located 115 kilometers North-West of L’esperance rock in the Kermadec island arc.
The focus lies at a depth of about 400 km.
Reports of casualties and damage were reported. There is no tsunami threat.
The most destructive recent earthquake in New Zealand in February 2011. Then in Christchurch was destroyed many houses, killed 185 people, including three Israelis. The magnitude was 6.3, but the epicenter was only 10 km South-East of Christchurch, and the focus lies at a depth of 5 km.
