Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided to boycott the awards ceremony EMET (omanut, Mada, Tarbut), said Second channel ITV.
Recipients of this award each year, outstanding scientists and artists, and it is awarded under the auspices of the Prime Minister. Each winner receives $ 100,000.
According to information published by the Second channel ITV, Netanyahu has decided to boycott the ceremony, as one of the winners of the award this year was actor and Director Oded Kotler. In 2015, Kotler was in the midst of the scandal, when he called supporters of Likud herd animals.
Speaking at a meeting of artists protesting against the initiatives of the Minister of culture and sports, Miri Regev, Kotler said: «Imagine, Ms. Regev, a world in which silence reigns, the world is silent and does not interfere with: there are no books, no music, no poems. Nothing prevents you to celebrate their winning 30 mandates, for which there is a herd of animals, silently chewing grass and straw.»
Amid the scandal that erupted after the speech Kotler, the actor apologized for what he called the «unfortunate wording». According to him, he wasn’t going to insult the voters of Likud.
Despite the fact that two years have passed since the Prime Minister decided not to take part in the ceremony, which Kotler will be awarded the prize. As the Second channel, Netanyahu announced his decision, the legal adviser to the Prime Minister’s Shlomit barnea-Pargo, who is a member of the Committee that selects the award winners.
June 13, ha’aretz quoted a comment by Oded Kotler, who said: «I respect the opinion and decision of the Prime Minister».
