On the morning of Tuesday, December 20, the office of the Prime Minister of Israel has issued a statement of Benjamin Netanyahu in connection with the killing in Ankara of the Russian Ambassador Andrei Karlov.
«Israel strongly condemns the brutal murder of the Russian Ambassador in Turkey Andrey Karlov, occurred last night in Ankara. We Express our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and the entire people of Russia. The murder of the diplomat underscored the need for joint efforts of the whole civilized world for the common struggle against the forces of terror,» the statement said Netanyahu.
As previously reported, 62-year-old Russian Ambassador Andrei Karlov was killed on the evening of December 19. He was shot 22-year-old graduate of the police Academy mevlüt MERT Altıntaş, two and a half year stint in the Turkish police and dismissed from the ranks of law enforcement after an attempted coup this summer.
According to the newspaper Hurriyet, Altıntaş, dressed in a suit, the evening of 19 December, used his old badge of a police officer and managed to pass with guns at the opening ceremony of the photo exhibition «Russia through the eyes of the Turks» in the Center of modern art, where he gave the Russian Ambassador.
According to the investigation, Altıntaş managed to produce nine shots, shouted «Allahu Akbar» and gave a short speech about how his actions are a revenge on Russia for the participation of the Russian army in the operations against the Sunnis in Syria, particularly in Aleppo. «We die there, you die here,» said Altıntaş. «Don’t forget Aleppo! Don’t forget Syria!», he shouted several times. He said that Russians will not be safe until they are in the safety of the Syrians and vowed to die as a Martyr. The killer has allowed other people to leave the room, he wasn’t trying to take hostages. Shortly thereafter, Altıntaş was shot dead by police.
In the shooting, in addition to Ambassador Andrey Karlov, injured three people.
The Turkish authorities stated that Altıntaş was an activist of «terrorist groups Fethullah» (movement of Islamic opposition leader Fethullah Gulen). But no evidence of this fact is not given. Gulen condemned the murder of the Russian Ambassador and said that his movement was not privy to this crime, reports Reuters.
Western media write that it is not known whether mevlüt MERT Altıntaş associated with any terrorist organization. But his actions are welcomed and «al-Qaeda» and «Islamic state».
Special services of Turkey have detained the father, mother and sister of the killer, and another two people suspected of facilitating Altıntaş.
