The Secretary-General of the Palestine Liberation Organization Saeb Erekat and member of the Executive Committee of the PLO Hanan Ashrawi issued a joint statement in which they criticized the decision of the UK government banning the boycott of Israel.
Senior representatives of Fatah believe that the official London made a significant step back. «The decision gives the Israeli occupation a feeling of permissiveness and threatens the principle of «Two States for two peoples.»», — reads the statement.
The document stresses the relationship of the decision with the Balfour Declaration on the establishment of a homeland for the Jewish people, published in 1917. According to Arcata and Ashrawi, the Declaration is the basis of «historical injustice in Palestine».
«Social organization should have the right to Express their position, and enable our citizens to participate in peaceful protests. The refusal to support the settlement project of democratic choice,» write the representatives of the PLO.
Recall: the British government published a decree banning local councils and civil society organizations to boycott Israeli products. The ban will apply to municipal structures, foundations, health care systems, Universities, student organisations, trade unions and other public organisations.
Experts note that this order should not be overestimated: the government just said that the issues of relations with other States within its jurisdiction, and local councils, as well as public organizations, have no right to boycott.
