The concentration of sperm in men in North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand over the past ten years has decreased by 52%.
The total sperm count of Western men has deteriorated by 59%.
This is indicated by the results of extensive research by Israeli scientists, published in the journal Human Reproduction.
The study was conducted from 1973 to 2011, and included 185 local and foreign studies on this topic, which was attended by 43 thousands of men.
Scientists came to the conclusion that the concentration of sperm counts in Western men over the last 40 years declined annually by 1.4%.
Dr. Hagai Levine of the Hebrew University, who led the team of researchers admitted that the results of the study have surprised scientists. Levin stressed that the causes of this phenomenon have not yet been determined.
