February 21, the inter-Ministerial Commission had considered the draft co-chair of the Zionist camp Tzipi Livni on civil marriages. However before the beginning of the meeting it was announced that the discussion would be postponed for 45 days.
According to the author of the bill, it would enable people who are unable to enter into a religious marriage («Huppah»), including many Russian-speaking Israelis, to formalize their relationship without going out of Israel, and also to get the same rights as any other married couple. Tzipi Livni recalled that a similar bill she was nominated as a Minister of justice.
Tzipi Livni noted that while the coalition parties torpedo the bill on civil marriages, have read it and agreed authoritative rabbis. Co-chair of the «Zionist camp» stressed that the support of rabbis was important to demonstrate that legislators have tremendous respect for Judaism and Jewish traditions. «The bill only protects the rights of those who are today denied the opportunity to marry and become a family in their home country,» says Tzipi Livni.
According to the author of the bill, the current government is «in thrall to the haredim», and it can’t decide to vote for this bill. However, it is afraid to fail, lest the indignation of the secular population. «The result is that — as usual with Netanyahu — decided not to decide to buy time,» said co-Chairman of the «Zionist camp».
