Poll: 43% of Russians justify Stalin’s repressions

The results of a survey conducted by the Russian center for public opinion research (research(VTSIOM), testify that 90% of Russians heard about the repressions, and 43% consider them «a necessary measure that allowed Stalin to maintain order in the country.»

49% of respondents said they «in no way justified crimes against humanity», and 57% of them grew up in families where this repression directly affected.

More than two thirds of Russian citizens from those who heard about the persecution, I think it is unfair judgement in the cases of the repressed, while 16% hold the opposite point of view.

That among their relatives was a people subjected to punitive measures in those days, reported by 24% of respondents; 37% of respondents believe that the victims of repression became those who disagree with government policy; 22% believe that the authorities deliberately destroyed the influential people. 24% believe that the repression suffered by traitors and conspirators, 23% believe that the victims were crooks and thieves.

The proportion that heard about the persecution among young people 18 to 24 years was 76%, and among respondents with less than secondary education – 70%, which is considerably lower than among middle-aged people (94-96% 45 years and older) enrolled in the universities (94%).

72% of Russians who have heard about the persecution, find it necessary to talk about the victims of the punitive machine of the Stalin era to the younger generation that it is never repeated, 22% believe that such conversations should be kept to a minimum because it impairs the country’s image.

This survey, which became the first joint project of the Museum of Gulag history, memory Foundation and VTSIOM, was held on June 9-10 by telephone interviews in a stratified random sample of dibasic landline and mobile numbers. In this study, was surveyed 1,200 respondents aged 18 years and older. The statistical margin of error is 3.5%.

Sociological studies show that in recent years significantly decreased the number of Russians who believe Stalin’s repression of crime, and increased the number of those who are inclined to justify human sacrifices made in the Stalin era high results.

At the same time, many politicians, officials and deputies began to respond positively to Joseph Stalin and his methods of government, and in the Russian cities there are more monuments, «the father of all Nations», reminds the website NEWSru.com.
