The results of a survey conducted by the Russian center for public opinion research (research(VTSIOM), testify that 90% of Russians heard about the repressions, and 43% consider them «a necessary measure that allowed Stalin to maintain order in the country.»
49% of respondents said they «in no way justified crimes against humanity», and 57% of them grew up in families where this repression directly affected.
More than two thirds of Russian citizens from those who heard about the persecution, I think it is unfair judgement in the cases of the repressed, while 16% hold the opposite point of view.

72% of Russians who have heard about the persecution, find it necessary to talk about the victims of the punitive machine of the Stalin era to the younger generation that it is never repeated, 22% believe that such conversations should be kept to a minimum because it impairs the country’s image.
This survey, which became the first joint project of the Museum of Gulag history, memory Foundation and VTSIOM, was held on June 9-10 by telephone interviews in a stratified random sample of dibasic landline and mobile numbers. In this study, was surveyed 1,200 respondents aged 18 years and older. The statistical margin of error is 3.5%.
